Is Picking Your Nose Good For You?

Compulsive habits like nose picking — or the act of inserting a finger into one’s nostril to remove mucus or foreign objects — has likely been practiced by humans for thousands of years. Perhaps longer! Unfortunately, however, there is no comprehensive or definitive history of nose picking. While some cultures consider it a socially unacceptable behavior, others view it as a natural and harmless act. Ultimately, the history of nose picking is difficult to trace, and its cultural significance and interpretation vary across different societies and individuals. Nevertheless, we are here to answer other questions you may have about nose picking, as well as some personal hygiene tips you may find useful.

Is it dangerous to pick your nose?

You probably won’t die if you pick your nose. But picking your nose can introduce germs and bacteria into your body — which can lead to infections. It can also damage the delicate lining of the nasal passages, causing bleeding and scarring. In addition, nose picking can spread viruses and bacteria to others, especially if you don’t wash your hands properly afterwards, so it is generally best to keep your hands and nasal passages clean to prevent infections. Moreso, a compulsive habit like picking your nose may be a sign that you need treatment for compulsive behaviors.

Are there benefits to picking your nose?

Science sure seems to imply that there may be benefits to picking your nose. The American Society of Microbiology did a study that proposed that picking your nose and eating your boogers can indeed be healthy. The study — titled “Salivary mucins protect surfaces from colonization by cariogenic bacteria” — basically concludes that the germs on your face can help strengthen the body’s defense against the germs that eventually make their way inside you. Some people may also find temporary relief from discomfort caused by dry or itchy nasal passages. Additionally, removing excess mucus or foreign objects from the nose can improve breathing and decrease the risk of infection. However, it is generally not recommended to pick your nose because people will probably make fun of you. If you need relief from your boogers, there are more hygienic and effective ways to alleviate these issues, such as using a saline nasal spray or blowing your nose gently. Perhaps you should indulge your inner consumerist and buy some nasal hygiene products.

What are boogers made out of?

Boogers, commonly referred to as snot or nasal mucus, are composed of a mixture of water, proteins, antibodies, and various particles such as dirt, dust, pollen, and other environmental debris that become trapped in the nasal passages. This nasal mucus plays a vital role in personal hygiene by filtering out harmful particles. The consistency of boogers can vary, influenced by factors like moisture levels and the type of particles present, leading to textures that range from soft and sticky to hard and crusty. Additionally, the color of boogers can differ, from clear or white to shades of yellow, green, or brown, depending on the type and concentration of particles, which can also be an indicator of potential health concerns related to nasal health and care.

Should I eat my boogers?

While it may not necessarily be harmful to do so, it is generally considered unhygienic and socially unacceptable. Additionally, the mucus in your nose acts as a trap for bacteria and other foreign particles, so consuming it may introduce those particles into your body. Therefore, it is best to dispose of your boogers by blowing your nose into a tissue or washing your hands after picking your nose. If you must eat your boogers, eat them at your own risk. We are not responsible if you get very sick or if someone kicks the shit out of you as the result of you eating your boogers.

Is it true that people who eat boogers develop stronger immune systems?

While we would not go so far as to include eating boogers on our list of children’s health tips, the concept is certainly compelling. According to University of Saskatchewan biochemistry professor and booger expert Scott Napper, one can certainly hypothesize so. “By consuming those pathogens caught within the mucus,” Napper asked, “Could that be a way to teach your immune system about what it’s surrounded with?” All that said, while the mucus in our nose contains antibodies that can help fight off infections, these antibodies are not really designed to be ingested and may not be effective in the digestive system. In fact, eating your boogers may introduce harmful bacteria and other foreign particles into your body and increase the risk of infections or other health problems. Therefore, it is best to avoid the habit of eating your boogers and instead focus on maintaining good hygiene practices and a healthy diet to boost your immune system.

Why do kids eat boogers?

Maybe because they are delicious? University of Saskatchewan biochemistry professor and booger expert Scott Napper notes that snot has a sugar-like taste — which may be a signal to the brain to eat the booger. When kids eat boogers, “could they just be fulfilling what we’re truly meant to do?” wonders Napper. But at the end of the day, the exact reasons why some children eat their boogers are not well understood, despite it being common behavior among young children. Some may suggest that it may be related to natural exploratory behaviors in childhood, while others speculate that it may be a way for children to build immunity by exposing themselves to small amounts of bacteria. However, it is generally not considered a healthy or hygienic habit, and children should be encouraged to use tissues or wash their hands instead. Of course, this is to say nothing of whatever stigma the children may suffer socially. Fortunately, treatment for compulsive behaviors exist!

Why is there blood in my boogers?

Bloody boogers can have a few different causes. One common cause is dryness in the nasal passages, which can cause the delicate blood vessels in your nose to become irritated and bleed. This can be especially common during the winter months when the air is dry, or if you are using certain medications, such as antihistamines or nasal sprays, which can also dry out your nasal passages. Another possible cause of bloody boogers is an injury to the nose, such as from picking your nose, blowing your nose too hard, or getting hit in the face.
